The Vaal Dam is officially South Africa's second biggest dam in terms of surface area and the third largest by water capacity or volume.  Due to its large surface area, the Vaal Dam extends over the provinces of Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and Free State.  This means that plenty of Vaal Dam fishing spots is available all along its banks.  The Vaal Dam is a fisherman’s dream of around 800km shoreline; indeed plenty of Vaal Dam fishing spots!  Due to the many Vaal Dam fishing spots, it is probably the most visited and enjoyed dam in South Africa as far as fishing is concerned.  Vaal Dam fishing spots are packed every weekend by anglers that swarm upon the Vaal Dam in the hope of catching that elusive big one.

Even though the Vaal Dam offers a shoreline packed with great fishing spots, it is unfortunate that a large portion of this shoreline is quite shallow and thus not that suitable for fishing.  However, if you wish to fish at Vaal Dam fishing spots located in shallow water, you are required to walk some distance into the water to rest the bait on the deeper more suitable floor.  The Vaal Dam is not a shallow dam overall though.  In some areas it is measured to be as deep as 47 meters, which means that enough fish is available in such areas to classify them as good Vaal Dam fishing spots.  Fish caught in such Vaal Dam fishing spots are usually quite big, especially the Barbel.  Regular anglers all have their favourite Vaal Dam fishing spots where they believe the true monsters among the fish hide.  Thus, take any campfire tale with a pinch of salt.  It is best to visit a number of Vaal Dam fishing spots over time to get a feel for the dam and its fish.                      

You can also expect to catch a number of Carp species at Vaal Dam fishing spots.  Carp of over 20kg has been reported to be caught once in a while.  Other species you might find in Vaal Dam fishing spots are fish like Mudfish, Small- and Largemouth Yellowfish and in selected Vaal Dam fishing spots the new addition, Largemouth Bass, although the Bass anglers might need a boat to get to these fishing spots.  According to reports, there are not any Tilapia species in the Vaal Dam or any of the Vaal Dam fishing spots.  This is put down to the fact that the temperature is not suitable.  However, Grass carp is caught regularly at certain Vaal Dam fishing spots all along the banks.  The occasional Koi fish are also caught at Vaal Dam fishing spots.
