Sailing clothing is an area often overlooked by many people new to the sport perhaps because they can be very expensive. In South Africa, however, we are lucky in that we have the most wonderful climate in the world so when you start sailing you can make do with an old T-shirt, rubber-soled training shoes and shorts. If you only sail in summer on inland waters then this is perfectly acceptable. If you sail throughout the winter or at sea you have to be far more careful. During the winter months it is essential to dress correctly, not as a fashion statement but because it can mean the difference between life and death. In the icy grip of winter, being in the water for only a few minutes can cause hypothermia to set in.

There are a number of things to take into consideration before you take to the water. Always prepare for cooler weather conditions as the temperature is generally 10 to 20 degrees lower on water. So it makes good sense for sailors to dress in layers. Also make sure to have a T-shirt and shorts available but cover up with long-sleeved thermal shirts. Track suites or water resistant spray jackets make good stand-by clothing. Two of the most common sailing injuries are rope burns and bruising caused by falls on slippery decks. To prevent such injuries, potential sailors should wear rubber-soled shoes and sailing gloves.

January Birth Flower

March Birth Flower

The daffodil is the March birth flower. Daffodils have the flower meaning of rebirth, respect, regard and unrequited love. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, therefore it is a symbol of rebirth. As the daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, it carries the flower meaning of hope as well.

March Birthstone

Birthstone Color: Pale Blue

If you can picture the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean, you will understand why the birthstone for March is named Aquamarine. Derived from the Roman word "Aqua," meaning water, and "mare," meaning sea, this pale blue gem does indeed resemble the color of seawater. The ancient Romans believed that the Aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea, having fallen from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore.

March Birth Flower

The Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family. Beryl is a mineral that crystallizes within large grained igneous rocks on the earth's crust. It varies in color from clear to vibrantly colored gemstones such as the Emerald. Beryl was used as far back as 2,000 years ago to correct vision, and it continues to be used today in the manufacture of eyeglasses. A gift of Aquamarine symbolizes both safety and security, especially within long standing relationships. Some people even say that the Aquamarine reawakens love in a tired marriage, so if you want to bring back that spark in your partner's eyes, you might consider this gem as an anniversary gift!
