At Vaalnest, we understand that the world in which we live sustains us, protects us from the elements and provides us with beautiful things to marvel at every day. Therefore, it is important that we try our utmost best to preserve the nature in which we are nestled and to which we owe our success. Vaalnest Boutique Hotel is a small and intimate hotel in the quaint town of Vaal Marina in the Vaal. Situated near the Vaal Dam, we know why it is necessary to sustain our environment as we are the ones who bear witness to the pollution of the dam.

This is why we make a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint and to take care of the environment within our reach. One way in which we are doing this is through our “Plant a Tree with Vaalnest” Responsible Tourism initiative. This initiative gives our lovely guests the opportunity to play their part in conserving the natural environment by giving each guest a gift pack consisting of a seed with soil, and an instruction booklet on how to plant a tree. The ultimate goal is to plant 400 trees across the country with the help of our Vaalnest guests. Furthermore, we try to ensure that our daily operations and activities impact our environment as little as possible. As of February 2015, we managed to achieve more than 48% reduction in electricity usage, 4.8% reduction in fuel energy usage and over 24% reduction in municipal water usage. We have also tried to minimise our waste through re-using and recycling our resources which has helped us spare over R10 000 per annum in materials and waste savings. Also, we try to encourage our guests to be mindful of how they make use of the resources available to them during their stay here, whether it be through water use or recycling efforts.

Our ongoing process to running a 100% green establishment is a mission achieved along with our guests and the local community. We take Responsible Tourism seriously because looking out for the environment is in line with what our establishment is all about- giving visitors a natural experience where they can be in touch with nature and all it has to offer.
