Vaal Dam: 72, 000 Black-winged Pratincoles!
A Vaal Dam Birding challenge: The Vaal Nest Boutique Hotel at Vaal Marina challenges bird watchers to beat the annual waterbird count at the Vaal Dam in 2010.
A whopping 72 000 Black-winged Pratincoles were spotted!
Ok, it might be a tall order. But during a weekend getaway to our tranquil boutique hotel near Vereeniging you can at least try to see a few! It is only an hours drive from Johannesburg and is not only a birders paradise, but also a Vaal Dam fishing and yachting mecca.
The 4 star graded hotel is environmentally friendly and the quiet town of Vaal Marina is ideal for bird watching.
According to Vaal Dam Birding Routes the Vaal Dam is one of the largest inland water bodies in South Africa and with a shoreline of over 950 km it has more shoreline than KwaZulu-Natal!
They report that due to the varied nature of the shoreline, development and the large amount of recreational activity, which takes place on the Vaal Dam, by far the best birding is actually outside Vaal at South Bay.
“A shallow keeled boat is required to view the birds there.”
On your visit to our hotel, you can wander off to the dam and also try and spot the Goliath Heron, Caspian Tern and the rare Lesser Black-backed Gull.
