When you spend time at Vaalnest Boutique Hotel, you’re always guaranteed a jam-packed retreat filled with loads of fun and adventure. Vaalnest is all about embracing the nature in which we are nestled. Our countless outdoor activities are sure to get the adrenalin junkie’s heart racing with excitement.

One of our more popular activities is the exciting hiking trail at Klipkraal Conservation. Klipkraal is a scenic trail located near Heidelberg and traverses both bush as well as open grassland, offering terrain that gets the heart rate up, but is suitable for the less experienced hikers. The scenery is typical of the Highveld and the grassland, offering views of the distant hills and the Vaal Dam. The hiking trail is perfect for anyone who appreciates the outdoors and doesn’t mind a bit of a challenge.

But if hiking isn’t your go-to activity, you need to know what to do to prepare for your first ever hike. We have compiled a list of tips that’ll leave you well equipped for your first hiking adventure, so that you can discover the beauty of nature at the pace you’re comfortable with.

1. Make a Checklist

This is probably the first thing you need to do when you’re about to embark on a trek. You need to make a checklist of your hiking gear and any essentials you might need to make your hike a successful one.

2. Tag along with a friend

Better yet, go hiking as a group. No matter how unfit you are, going hiking with other people will keep you going. Having someone there embarking on this journey with you will make it more bearable and way more fun.

3. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

This is important. Trekking on open land leaves you more exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Always pack a hat, sunglasses and sunblock.

4. Pack light

Our hiking trails are not as serious and daunting as a full-on mountain trek, so there’s no need to carry a backpack the size of a toddler. Only pack the essentials- water, sunblock, a first-aid kit, insect repellent, snacks etc.

5. Eat and drink well

This applies to before, and during the hike. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Furthermore, food is your fuel, so make sure that you eat food that will give you energy that’ll sustain you throughout the hike.

Granted. Hiking isn’t a walk in the park, but when paired with an amazing and scenic hiking trail, the right gear, the correct mindset, and a recuperating stay at Vaalnest Boutique Hotel, hiking can easily become your new favourite hobby.
