Food birds love
We were very proud when BirdLife South Africa recently asked us to joint them as a “bird friendly hotel”. The team at Vaalnest Boutique Hotel, at Vaal Marina, Vaal Dam are keen bird lovers and many guests visit us for a break away weekend to enjoy the birding routes the Vaal Dam offers.
I came across this list of food birds love. Those who want to enjoy bird watching at home can try it. I’m certainly going to try them at Vaalnest!
Here are some common food items and the birds that can be attracted
Wrens, mockingbirds, thrashers, sparrows, warblers, tanagers, titmice,
towhees, creepers, robins, blackbirds, kinglets, cardinals, grosbeaks,
buntings, chickadees, bluebirds and thrushes.
Rendered Suet (also lard or shortening):
Woodpeckers, wrens, warblers, tanagers, nuthatches, creepers,
chickadees, orioles, titmice, mockingbirds, cardinals, finches, bluebirds,
grosbeaks and buntings.
Peanuts and Peanut Butter:
Woodpeckers, wrens, warblers, nuthatches, creepers, chickadees, titmice,
mockingbirds, finches, grosbeaks and juncos.
Wax wings, robins, bluebirds, thrushes.
Raisins and Currents:
Wax wings, orioles, robins, bluebirds and thrushes.
